Mary Ann Martin, M.D.
Diplomate, American Board of Internal Medicine / Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism
The study of Endocrinology has grown to encompass the understanding and evaluation of the function of the entire human organism, and Dr. Martin approaches her field with the utmost enthusiasm. As director of our Endocrinology Division, she brings her amazing intelligence and determination to work with her each day. In the past year, she has spearheaded the development of our comprehensive "WeightSmart" Weight Loss Program and our related Diabetes Management Program. Treating and preventing obesity and its related maladies, controlling the spectrum of issues of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, evaluating and managing the many faces of thyroid disease, and involvement with a myriad of other endocrine disorders, has become more than a job for Dr. Martin, it is her pervasive mission here at WMGI.
Her college years were spent at UCLA, where she received her degree in Communications. Perhaps it was her physician dad who influenced her, but in any event, she changed courses and decided to pursue a medical career. After receiving her M.D. she moved to the midwest and did an internal medicine residency at Wayne State University Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan This was followed by a fellowship in endocrinology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. After all those cold winters, she happily returned to her origins in Southern California and joined the Women's Medical Group of Irvine, bringing her family along with her.
Dr. Martin has extensive research experience in the field of diabetes, along with a special interest in osteoporosis. She is a certified Clinical Bone Densitometrist. In addition, she is a diplomate of both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. She is a fellow of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.
Dr. Martin lives in Laguna Niguel with her physician husband and their two children. Her passions outside of the medical field include tennis, volleyball and playing the piano.
