Gynecology

Women have special and unique needs which continually change over the course of a lifetime. One thing that never changes, however, is the need for a caring and attentive healthcare expert to oversee and ensure their well-being throughout life's varied stages.

Gynecology is the medical specialty which deals with the female reproductive organs and the hormones that are involved in their function. But these organs are a part of the whole body, and the gynecological medical professionals at Women's Medical Group of Irvine do not treat the female organs only, but treat the entire woman.

Well-Woman exams at our practice begin with a comprehensive evaluation of all aspects of your health and well-being. An examination is performed that includes a thorough pelvic and breast exam, as well as an exam of the heart, lungs, and thyroid gland. If other medical problems exist, they are addressed and appropriate referrals made. All necessary laboratory testing is ordered or performed, imaging studies are ordered and follow-up visits are arranged.

Sexual well-being is an important aspect of health, and we address these issues to the degree each patient desires.  If indicated, patients can be referred for in-depth evaluation and treatment of sexual issues to our Female Sexual Medicine Program.

Incontinence, painful bladder syndromes, and overactive bladder problems are common, but often neglected by many medical practitioners. At Women's Medical Group of Irvine we address all types of female bladder problems, and offer a full array of therapies, including medical and physical therapies, use of new therapeutic devices, acupuncture and the newest, most sophisticated surgeries.

Menopause, peri-menopause, and their long-lasting effects are handled with care and skill at Women's Medical Group of Irvine. We are very knowledgeable about the use of bio-identical hormones and treat each patient as an individual with her own unique needs and concerns. Hormone therapy is discussed at great length and each woman is guided towards making her own decisions. The many health issues which begin to surface during those years are reviewed and dealt with, as well.

Adolescents have many unaddressed health care needs, and even more questions!  We strive to make a young woman's first gynecologic visit a comfortable and even pleasurable event, as she has the opportunity to ask all the questions she wants, and gets all the reassurance she needs. We encourage all young women to receive the many recommended vaccinations available.

Surgery is never undertaken lightly at Women's Medical Group of Irvine. We take a very conservative approach and try to maintain all organs within the body, avoiding surgical interventions if at all possible. Nevertheless, there are times when surgery is necessary to maintain a good quality of life, and even to maintain life itself. 

When surgery is needed, it is performed by Dr. Felice Gersh, one of the premiere gynecological surgeons in Orange County. As an Assistant Clinical Professor of Gynecology at USC/Keck School of Medicine, she teaches residents and interns how to perform surgery. At Women's Medical Group of Irvine she performs the most sophisticated procedures, including advanced hysteroscopic, laparoscopic, and vaginal techniques. Dr. Gersh has even taught the newest incontinence surgical techniques to other gynecological surgeons.
